Claim This CompanyChamp Sports touts itself as one of the largest athletic and apparel mall retailers in all of America. Champ Sports' selection of products include footwear of all kinds, apparel and accessories of a wide variety, and a large and varied assortment of athletic equipment. Such a variety of products allows Champs Sports to stand above from other mall-based athletic stores by stocking a full and complete assortment of products in a wide variety of sports and sporting activities. Champ Sports' store coverage reaches from United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands with over 550 stores. Champ Sports also prides itself with its ability to house so many products in their 3,500 square feet of selling space.
Champ Sports' history starts all the way back to the 19th century when in 1879 the F.W. Woolworth Company was established in Utica, New York. It became to be known one of the first five and dime retail stores in the United States. After 90 years of business, the F.W. Woolworth Company bought the Kinney Shoe Corporation in 1963 and began operating it as its subsidiary. Eleven years later in 1974, Foot Locker, the parent company of Champ Sports was founded. Later in the 1980s, the Woolworth Company diversified its stock in specialty stores by bringing in Champ Sports along with Afterthoughts and Northern Reflections. The idea with these three stores was to see which concept would work. If one would fail at a mall, the other two would replace it. Eventually Champ Sports became the most successful of the three.
In 1997, the Woolworth Company sold the majority of its stores and assests to the big-box mega retail store Wal-Mart. The rest of the stores and assets of Woolworth, including Champ Sports became Venator Group Inc. Eventually the company changed names again, naming itself the Champ Sports parent company, Foot Locker Inc., which is what it stands as today.
Champ Sports is also the main sponsor of the collegiate football bowl the Champs Sports Bowl. This football exhibition game is held in Orlando, Florida at the Citrus Bowl. Founded in 1990 as the Blockbuster Bowl and in the early 2000s became the rebirth of the Tangerine Bowl, Champ Sports has been the main sponsor for this bowl which pits the Atlantic Coast Conference against the Big East since 2004.
