What You’ll Do

  • Supervise the processing of end-to-end Payroll processing, ensuring process controls are being met and deadlines are met
  • Maintain current on all developments in Canadian payroll tax legislative changes, federally and provincially, ensuring that all members of the Payroll team understand any and all payroll tax changes and how these changes may impact payroll processing and systems
  • Liaison with Human Resources, Compensation, and Benefits on payroll matters, consulting, advising and partnering as appropriate
  • Supervise staff to ensure timely and accurate processing of all entries for payroll included but not limited to garnishments, ROE’s, severance payments, and remittances
  • Develop and maintain Key Performance indicators for Payroll Team
  • Look for opportunities to streamline payroll process to ensure faster and more automated processing or to improve accuracy
  • Responsible for supervision of payroll response process for the entire department
  • With assistance from staff, respond to customers in a very timely manner to ensure their questions are responded to in a satisfactory manner. Ensure internal
  • HR department’s questions are responded to quickly and accurately so that the employees get fast resolution of issues.
  • Provide on-going feedback to payroll team members to ensure continual learning and improvement through lessons learned from incoming questions
  • Work with Finance to ensure month end deadlines are always met and continually improve processes and relationships as required
  • Liaison with Tax, Finance and Human Resources departments on all tax and payroll accounting matters, consulting, advising and partnering as appropriate
  • Work with Payroll Manager to plan, coordinate and schedule resources to ensure a smooth year end process
  • Assist the team with on-going documentation of processes

Qualifications RequiredQualifications Required

  • 7 to 9 years diverse payroll experience with at least 3 years at the supervisory level is mandatory
  • Post-secondary education in Business or Finance and ideally, advanced certification within the Canadian Payroll Association
  • Experience in a large, in-house payroll environment
  • Excellent knowledge of Federal and Provincial payroll tax and reporting requirements
  • Strong experience with year-end payroll procedures including tax reconciliations, tax slip preparation and taxable benefits
  • Strong understanding of payroll process and the integration of other functional areas including Human Resources, Corporate Finance, Corporate Tax and Audit
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Knowledge of VIP, PeopleSoft and Workday is an asset
  • Exceptional time management skills and ability to meet very strict deadlines
  • Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent multi-tasking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and client services skills including interactions at all levels of the organization
  • Strong leadership abilities including the ability to motivate team members
  • Ability to influence at various levels of the organization accompanied by strong communication skills
