The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Director of Academics, Football. The Director of Academics reports to the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Student Development and is charged with oversight of academic advising, counseling, and assistance to student athletes in areas of course selection, registration procedures, degree requirements, career planning, University resources, and other related topics associated with academic performance and overall student development for a caseload of Football student-athletes. The Director of Academics, Football will serve as a point person for coach communication and the implementation of time sensitive interventions for Football student-athletes. As members of the student development team, Academics staff encourage and support student-athlete engagement with their own learning and development through our Pathways program, which connects students to opportunities and networks in Career, Community, Leadership, Personal, and Academic areas. Other core duties include communicating with various offices including the NCAA Athletic Certification officer, Compliance, and On Grounds faculty, as well as maintaining appropriate files and records of academic information and diligently monitoring and communicating athletic eligibility and academic progress through grade reports. This position requires consistent, effective, and open communication with coaches, faculty, and staff thorough understanding of NCAA, ACC, and University guidelines and regulations.​
Duties and responsibilities:
  • Manage an effective process of monitoring student-athlete academic progress, incorporating current best practices in the profession. Read reports regularly and communicate with service providers (tutors, learning specialists, and academic mentors) and faculty to consistently recalibrate individualized student services.
  • Manage supports and design interventions for student-athletes through effective collaboration with coaches, mentors, tutors, and faculty.
  • Facilitate the production and delivery of regular academic reports with accurate, timely, and relevant information.
  • Provide academic advising services to a caseload of Football student-athletes; monitor their academic progress and continuing eligibility.
  • Communicate appropriately with coaching staff through formal and informal meetings; regularly and promptly share detailed information regarding the ongoing academic progress of assigned student-athletes through delineated channels.
  • Initiate and maintain regular contact with faculty of student-athletes on your caseload or those who may be presenting concern.
  • Navigate complex bureaucracy, resources, and academic requirements to help student-athletes meet their academic and athletic goals.
  • Connect student-athletes to resources for their career, personal, leadership, and academic development.
  • Serve as an academic representative for on-campus recruiting operations. Prepare and update presentation materials for use during prospective student-athletes’ visits to campus.
  • With a thorough understanding of NCAA legislation and continuing eligibility, serve as the point of contact for monitoring and projecting student-athlete academic outcomes.
  • Regularly communicate the progress, outcomes, and direction of work to the Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Development; make recommendations concerning improvement of programs and services
  • Support department and campus-wide student success efforts through participation in a variety of department activities and committee work.

Qualifications RequiredQualifications Required

  • Demonstrated and successful experience providing academic support to student-athletes at a D1 institution.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various constituencies in a time-sensitive and occasionally pressured environment.
  • Proven skill in identifying, coordinating, and implementing supports and resources to meet the dynamic needs of student-athletes.
  • Knowledge of learning strategies for collegiate work and some familiarity with the needs of those with learning differences and disabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with both student-athletes and the stakeholders who impact student-athlete well being and academic success, including but not limited to report generation and delivery, faculty engagement, and time sensitive outreach.
  • Experience developing productive relationships with student-athletes to motivate them to reach their potential.
  • Evidence of commitment to principles and practices that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills and proactive, responsive interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse student populations, university personnel (e.g. faculty, college deans, administrators, athletic coaches and staff), as well as representatives from the community.
