Job Description
The Washington Nationals are seeking an Analyst to join our Baseball Research & Development team. The analyst will use data science to derive insights from baseball datasets to support player evaluation, player development, and in-game strategy. The analyst will report to the Director of Baseball Research and largely work on long-term research projects. Collaboration is a critical part of working on the R&D team, including informal interactions, as well as weekly analyst meetings and regular code reviews. Analysts must also be able to communicate clearly with members of departments across baseball operations, including technical and non-technical audiences. Our department is flexible enough to accommodate candidates with specialized strengths or areas of interest, but we are seeking applicants with general ‘baseball feel’ and data science experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research specific areas of the game using statistical modeling
- Build and maintain these models and take ownership of their results
- Communicate findings through written reports, presentations, and informal conversations
- Develop deep understanding of existing body of R&D team’s research, code base, and database. Take on some responsibility for improving and maintaining existing projects
- Design and build informative data visualizations for use in automated reports or internal web applications
- Perform ad hoc analyses on questions that come to Baseball R&D from across the organization
Qualifications Required
- Ability to complete long-term statistical modeling projects and incorporate technical feedback
- Proficiency in technical report composition
- Clear writing and communication
- Enthusiasm for learning new skills related to programming, statistical modeling, and data visualization
- Passion for baseball and desire to work in baseball operations
- Working knowledge of sabermetric concepts
