In conjunction with the Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Head Coach sets the overall vision of the Mount Allison Mounties Varsity Hockey Program, including setting program goals and objectives, and is responsible for the overall management of the program, which includes recruiting, developing and guiding student-athletes in accordance with MtA values.

Responsibilities

  • Define concrete action plans toward the realization of the vision, goals and objectives for the hockey program and ensure their implementation, in synergy with those of the Athletics Department
  • Develop and implement an effective recruitment program to attract outstanding student athletes to Mount Allison University
  • Provide guidance and support to student-athletes towards achieving their greatest potential both academically and athletically, which includes helping design and/or monitoring team members’ personal development programs and progress with respect to their academic, athletic, and community citizenship
  • Act as a role model and ensure adherence to procedures and policies of the Athletics Department and Mount Allison University to ensure the optimal realization of team goals and objectives
  • Monitor the student-athletes to ensure their compliance with all team, departmental, university, and AUS/U SPORTS policies, rules, and regulations
  • Build and manage a coaching staff that optimizes opportunity for success
  • Become an expert in all pertinent AUS/ U SPORTS regulations
  • Establish positive relationships with department staff, other university departments and faculties, and other groups such as high schools, communities, boosters, alumni and media
  • Understand the critical role the head coach plays in the engagement of alumni for the support of our program, and contribute to the fundraising activities of the Program, which includes developing alumni relationships and alumni engagement with the program
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications RequiredQualifications Required

  • Minimum of 7 years coaching experience at the Assistant Head Coach or Head Coach level
  • Previous experience coaching at the U SPORTS level will be considered an asset
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. Kinesiology, Recreation or Sports Administration), with a focus on in the field of human kinetics, physical education, coaching, kinesiology, leadership, Exercise Science, Sport Management, or another appropriate program
  • Minimum certification of High Performance 1 coaching designation required, with the expectation that the successful candidate will complete the HP2 certification within two years
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and motivational skills
  • Ability to acquire and maintain clear vulnerable sector check
  • Ability to travel for away games and/or tournaments, as well as work evenings and weekends as needed
