Job Description

Queen’s University Rowing program seeks a dynamic Head Coach with a student-athlete focused approach to lead this high-performance sport team. Established in the 1970s, the Men’s and Women’s Rowing programs at Queen’s University have consistently demonstrated excellence, with numerous championship titles and a strong emphasis on academic success. The Head Coach will be responsible for the overall direction, planning, and implementation of the Rowing program, fostering a culture of excellence and supporting student-athletes in their pursuit of both athletic and academic achievements.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote a culture of inclusion and diversity within the Athletics & Recreation department, aligning with university initiatives for equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Execute all coaching duties essential for the success of a Varsity Team program, including recruitment, team selection, performance planning, skill development, tactical preparation, and competition management.
  • Collaborate with the Director of High-Performance Sport Programs to design and implement a comprehensive high-performance plan, positioning Queen’s University at a competitive level nationally.
  • Stay abreast of current knowledge, trends, and practices in rowing to maintain a competitive program.
  • Support student-athletes through various programs and services, including academic support, recruitment processes, and compliance with competition requirements.
  • Coordinate with other Athletics & Recreation units to enhance athlete performance and generate revenue in support of program costs.
  • Enhance the profile and reputation of the Rowing program through community engagement, alumni relations, and participation in departmental initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Strong leadership skills with a focus on student-athlete development.
  • Extensive experience in rowing coaching, preferably at the collegiate level.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Commitment to working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by program needs.

Qualifications Required

  • Minimum 3 years of post-secondary education completion; university degree preferred.
  • Previous rowing coaching experience (5+ years) in provincial and/or national sport high-performance environments, with three years in a Head Coaching role preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of sport coaching systems and strategies, capable of coaching at an elite level in the sport.
  • Experience in developing high-performance athletes (ages 18-25) toward provincial, national, and international standards.
  • Fully certified as a Performance Coach (Level 3 equivalent) NCCP, actively pursuing Advanced Performance Coach or High-Performance Coach (Level 4/5) status preferred.
  • Completion of Safe Sport education through the Coaching Association of Canada, along with Concussion Awareness training and injury management.
  • Consideration given to equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership, program development, and athlete development skills at a high-performance level.
  • Must be (or become upon hiring) a Chartered Professional Coach (ChPCs) or Registered Coach with the Coaching Association of Canada, preferred.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
  • Valid Province of Ontario Class G driver’s license required.
