Job Description
The City of Markham is seeking seasoned professionals and tourism-related business leaders to serve as a Board Director on the Board of Destination Markham Corporation (DMC). There are 13 members of the Board of Directors, comprised of 8 independent Directors and 5 non-independent Directors (being the Mayor and 4 Members of Council). The Board of Directors shall be appointed by Markham Council with staggered terms.

Qualifications Required
Markham is recognized as a vibrant and diverse tourism and entertainment destination, providing visitors with exceptional experiences. The Board of Directors shall consider itself a leader and strategic partner in the strengthening and expansion of Markham’s tourism economy. Their mandate and strategic direction will be to:
- Recognize, embrace and promote the unique character, attributes and sense of place of Markham including its residents, communities, businesses, attractions, and its built and natural features;
- Develop and implement multi-year marketing plans that address Markham’s strategic goals and objectives as a tourism destination;
- Enhance growth of the local tourism sector by identifying and promoting opportunities to attract strategic investments and new infrastructure that will generate net positive economic growth in Markham;
- To facilitate a high level of marketing collaboration amongst Markham’s tourism industry stakeholders.
Candidates for appointment to the Board should be available to spend the requisite amount of time on matters related to the DMC, and demonstrate sound judgment, personal integrity, as well as business expertise. This will include experience related to the tourism industry, and on boards of commercial corporations. Directors should also bring to the table expertise in at least two of the following areas: finance, legal, accounting, marketing, operations, human resource management, and economic development. Knowledge of Markham, as well as knowledge and experience with public-private partnerships would be an asset. The ability to work effectively as a member of a team and strong communication skills are essential.
