Job Description

Reporting to the partnership, the Adaptive Sport Coordinator will serve as a critical point of contact within the community who will recruit and retain individuals to adaptive sport opportunities, educate individuals, communities, and service providers on adaptive sport opportunities, facilitate increased access and inclusion in sport and recreation and support the sustainable development of adaptive sport initiatives.

Key Competencies and Points of Responsibility:

Building Relationships

The coordinator will build meaningful relationships within the community in support of increased adaptive sport participation. Points of responsibility may include recruitment of individuals with a disability for adaptive sport programs, creating awareness of opportunities, helping to remove barriers to adaptive sport participation, working with the disability community to promote and showcase a variety of different sport opportunities, working with adaptive sport organizations to market adaptive sport opportunities to the community. 

Directing Change

The coordinator will encourage and support themselves and others to seek opportunities for different and innovative approaches to addressing problems and opportunities. Points of responsibility may include resource development, IDEA strategy creation, assessment, and implementation, and Policy, and Practice development.

Supporting Participant and Member Needs

The coordinator will seek to understand the needs and concerns of participants with disabilities and work with a variety of organizations to take action to meet those needs and concerns. Points of responsibility may include participant recruitment, facilitating connections between people with disabilities and adaptive sport opportunities within the province, providing education and awareness to organizations on the needs of and barriers faced by participants.

Innovating

The coordinator will generate innovative solutions by implementing different and novel ways to deal with problems and opportunities. Points of responsibility may include leveraging diverse resources, developing recruitment and retention strategies, and the adoption and support of diverse working groups.

Leading and Living the Values and Vision

The Adaptive Sport Coordinator will champion inclusion by seeking to understand and take action that respects the principles of IDEA. They will advocate the benefits and value of diversity to others, challenge exclusionary practices, examine and confront their own biases and behaviors, and approach the work with intent to understand and support. They will embrace the principle of “Nothing about us without us” which recognizes that people with lived experience know what is best for them and their community and that their participation is critical to the success of the project or initiative. Points of Responsibility may include supporting communication efforts, advocating for IDEA within the disability community, capacity building, creating awareness and transferring knowledge.

Qualifications Required

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and supervisory skills
  • Ability to work within a volunteer association as a staff member
  • Leadership, initiative and passion for adaptive sport
  • Ability to represent the organization in a positive and proactive manner
  • Proficient in the use of social media and the ability to adapt to new and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to travel throughout Saskatchewan and access to reliable transportation. This position will require extensive travel throughout the province including northern communities.
  • Evening and weekend work will be required.
  • Knowledge of the principles of IDEA and programs, initiatives, or actions that improve the state of inclusion.
  • Ability to provide a Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Verification prior to employment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Degree/diploma in recreation, sports administration or related discipline or the individual may have the equivalent gained through experience
  • Knowledge of adaptive sport and/or not-for-profit sport sector
  • Preference for individual located in Saskatoon or surrounding area
  • Basic knowledge of medical conditions, disability categories in sport, and social service systems in Saskatchewan
  • Marketing tools and an ability to converse with a broad range of people
  • Possible fundraising skills and long-term stewardship practices
