Claim This Company LoadingThe professional ice hockey team known as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, or simply the WBS Penguins, competes in the American Hockey League (AHL) as the affiliate of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins. Their home games take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania, near the city of Wilkes-Barre. The team boasts two Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy wins for achieving the best record in the AHL regular season.
History:
During the 1990s, the Pittsburgh Penguins' primary minor league affiliate was the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL. However, as the IHL shifted focus away from developmental purposes, the Penguins sought an AHL affiliate. In 1996, they acquired the dormant Cornwall Aces AHL franchise from the Colorado Avalanche, reactivating it for the 1999–2000 season after delays in constructing their intended arena in Wilkes-Barre Township. Affectionately termed the "Baby Penguins" by fans, the team's mascot is Tux the penguin, sporting number No. 99 in homage to the inaugural 1999 season.
While the WBS Penguins have reached the Calder Cup final three times, they've yet to claim the championship. Notably, they reached the finals in their second and fifth seasons, falling short against the Saint John Flames and the Milwaukee Admirals, respectively. Their most recent finals appearance was in 2008, ultimately losing to the Chicago Wolves.
In 2011, the WBS Penguins clinched the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy with a remarkable 117 points in the regular season. Goaltender Brad Thiessen received the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award for his stellar performance, while head coach John Hynes earned the Louis A. R. Pieri Memorial Award. Despite this achievement, the Penguins were eliminated in the playoffs by the Charlotte Checkers.
With an impressive playoff record, the Penguins reached postseason play in all but four seasons of their existence, boasting a 16-season playoff streak from 2002–03 to 2017–18.
The team initiated the Penguins Black and Gold Game in 2009, featuring players from both the Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, including Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. This event marked the first head-to-head meeting between the two stars. Additionally, the Wilkes-Barre Junior Pens, an affiliated youth-level organization, was established in 2009, utilizing the Ice Rink at Coal Street Park as their base.
Rivalries:
Initially, the Philadelphia Phantoms were the Penguins' primary rivals, followed by the Hershey Bears after the Phantoms' relocation. Currently, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms maintain a competitive rivalry with the Penguins.
