Job Description

Under the direction of the Senior Head Coach and the High-Performance Director, the NextGen coach’s main function will be to assist the National Team Program with the respective goals of producing elite athletes and international competition excellence. It is understood that the responsibilities may change throughout the year or from year to year.

ROLE

The NextGen coach (hereafter named NGC) is to act as an identifier and developer of talent through:

  • The training and preparation of the athletes in the National Excellence Program (September to December)
  • The training and preparation of the athletes within one of TCMV’s summer Programs (May to August)
  • The identification and monitoring of all athletes in VC’s Development Pathway (January-April)
  • The technical/tactical alignment of all coaches within TCMV’s development pathway

LEVEL OF AUTHORITY
Structure

Reports to: Senior Team Head Coach and High-Performance Director (HPD) Supervises: Responsibilities as agreed upon in the work plan

Works with: Development Coach, Athletes, Other Coaching Staff, Sport Science Team, Centre Staff, Other VC Staff

Power of Decision

The NGC has sufficient authority in the administrative, physical, technical, and tactical areas that are necessary in the daily management of the team’s affairs, approved policies, and programs of the Association, as directed by the Senior Head Coach. In addition, this position has the authority to plan and implement programs regarding the National Teams directly delegated by the National Coach. Beyond these limits, decisions are to be approved by the Head Coach and the HPD.

Qualifications Required

1. Athlete Identification and Preparation of Athletes

  • Assist with selection of athletes for the national team programs, through the requested consultation from the Head Coach (senior team) and the Development Lead coach (developmental programs).
  • Manage the liaison between Volleyball Canada’s development programs and the Provincial/Territorial High Performance programs
  • Manage the liaison with the Usports/CCAA Programs.
  • Assist in the scouting and the identification of athletes via the different platforms available to Volleyball Canada (GMTM website, VolleyMetrics, Perfbook, etc.)
  • Have input into a plan that will unify the athlete identification system throughout Canada and the collection of research data that will lead to Canadian standards being established.

2. Program Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Will be involved in the development, implementation, and analysis of national team programs consistent with the objectives established in the quadrennial plan in conjunction with the Senior Head Coach, the Sport Science Team, and the High Performance Director. The NGC may be tasked with part of the planning as designated by the Senior Head Coach.

3. Communications

  • May be requested to assist with communications with partners through:
    • Input in VC publications
    • Cooperation with the media for interviews and promotion of the team.
    • Maintain regular communication with athletes in and out of centre, as requested by the Senior Head Coach
    • Provide the best possible tactical and technical advice to all athletes involved in team camps or competitions, as directed by the Senior Head Coach

4. Performance Analysis

  • This position will work closely with the national team coaching staff to effectively deliver the Performance Analysis component of the program including:
    • Specific team and individual statistical systems and scouting systems
    • Computer driven methodology for analysis of skill performance and scouting opponents
    • Perform video analysis of match tapes
    • Prepare scouting reports and assist with game plans for competition
    • Perform statistical functions during competitions
    • Ongoing development and maintenance of the Performance Analysis system
    • Keep an annual record of all matches played, won-loss record and scores, and individual statistic

5. Reports

  • During the year, the NGC will provide reports for the Head Coach and HPD as required. As well they be asked to assist with information as required by the Head Coach and HPD for reporting purposes.
