 Job Description

The Mental Health Specialist is responsible, in collaboration with the Health Services team, for the planning, preparation, and delivery of mental health support services to the Canadian Paralympic Team at Major Games. The incumbent will be a Canadian Paralympic Team (CPT) member for Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games working closely with the Health Services Team and Issue Management Team. The position will be reviewed for the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games as well as future Paralympic Games.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Pre-Games

  • Design a mental health support plan to be delivered as part of the Games Health Services Team (HST) to Canadian Paralympic Team athletes, coaches, technical leaders and staff at Major Games in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, Executive Director, Sport and Director, Paralympic Performance & Pathways
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders including the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s senior leadership, NSO technical leaders and mental performance consultants
  • Develop and disseminate resources to key stakeholders outlining the mental health support services to be provided at Games
  • Attend the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s Planning and Preparation Sessions for Major Games

At Games/Onsite

  • Provide mental health support services as part of the Games HST to Canadian Paralympic Team athletes, coaches, technical leaders, and staff
  • Collaborate with the Chief Medical Officer and HST Clinic Manager to coordinate clinic time and client records
  • Support crisis situations on the request of the Issue Management Team

Post-Games

  • Provide feedback on the Games Mental Health Specialist position and mental health support services at Tokyo 2020 to inform feasibility and implementation for subsequent Games.

Qualifications RequiredQualifications Required

Essential

  • Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology or similar
  • Registration and good standing with provincial College of Psychologists; and CSPA or AASP membership
  • Professional liability insurance
  • Ability to communicate and write in both official languages
  • Experience practicing in high-performance sport
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with both internal and external colleagues (e.g. CPC employees, vendors, sub-contractors)

Preferred

  • Experience working at Major Games
  • Experience working with parasport athletes
  • Experience with crisis management situations

Desirable

  • Sport Scientist Canada HP Certification (when available in 2021)
